Adirondack night skies are one of the most beautiful things in the world…I wish I could describe to you in words what it is like to sit in the middle of the lake and look up.  Nowhere else have I seen the milky way split the sky from horizon to horizon like it does here and nowhere else do shooting stars look like fireballs flying above you.  Last night some of us went out in the Jadie and...

Things I’ve Learned at Tapawingo This Summer Separating the mail is one of the funnest jobs on the island.  Sometimes I have to fight off people who try to steal this job from me. The slushy machine is possessed – how can so much good come out of something so evil? Clipboards & stenos are Miss Joy’s favorite office supplies.  They also happen to be completely...

It's been awhile...
Session 6!!! WOOOOW!  As it always does, the summer is flying by.  Sorry it has been awhile, things have been crazy here!   Here is a quick update on what has been going on: 1. Last week event hours included Tapawingonaire- which was ridiculous and involved a lot of screaming and laughs- and Ultimate Frisbee which was also quite chaotic.  I think having 12 players on the field at a time was a bad...

Maggie.
One of my faaaaavorite girls is here this week.  She is 10 years old and even though she is only about 3 feet tall, her personality makes up for any lack of height… This is the conversation we just had while she ran circles in the field and  jumped up and down in front of me: “MISS EMILY IT’S WAINING!!! WAIN! WAIN! WAIN! WAIN!” “I know! It’s a sun...

All Camp Swim.
Tonight Alistair Begg visited the island.  In true Alistair Begg form, he didn’t speak for very long, thus leaving us with about 30 extra minutes of ‘free time’ before devos were supposed to start….The obvious answer to this time dilemma was to call for an all-camp swim.  It was craaaaazy.  I think I almost drowned like 5 times. Pictures to come.

Things I learned on day 1 of session 1
1. Always count how many hikes are scheduled to go out…we only have 2 vans. 2. Carry the putt-putt radio when I leave the office…sorry Gemma. 3. Before making teams for games and printing 30 copies of an event hour memo, check if cabins are on overnights (duuuuh). 4. Count swim bands before a new session…coloring yellow bands with a green magic marker doesn’t really...

We are now in the third week of staff training.  Crazy.  Here’s what we are up to: lifegaurd training, archery certification, huge hike day Thursday, sleep out on the beach tomorrow, Deerfoot Wednesday and lots and lots of activity area training (woo!)  Tonight we successfully completed epi-pen training with Cindy Rumsey (what a sweetie) from COTW and currently the sounds of the counselors...

This is the craziest staff I have ever been a part of…I literally laugh all day, every day…This afternoon we practiced swamping canoes and other rescues out in the lake.  Let’s just say that by the end, we had bruised legs, 4 unintentionally swamped boats and a completely ripped lifejacket.  I have never laughed so hard in my life.

Another 3-day
The life of a tap girl is a funny thing…each summer we like to embark on a little adventure we affectionately refer to as the 3 Day. Three days of living in the woods, pottying in the woods ;), cooking over an open fire, and spending time in sweet fellowship. The 3 day of 2010 was definitely one to remember! Rain, rain, rain, and more rain. Plus 30 degree temperatures. It was memorable to...

I've been sucked into the blogosphere.
June 2nd will be the first day of my 11th summer at Tapawingo.  Wow.  It’s always been hard to explain to people exactly what day-to-day life is like at Tap, so in honor of spending over a decade on the island, I’ve decided it’s finally time to start to write about it.  To be honest, I’ve always been skeptical about having a blog of any sort (no offense Andrew), but...
